JCMUA Temporary Force Main ByPass

Jersey City, NJ

Project Overview

The New Jersey Transit Hudson-Bergen Light Rail services approximately 52,000 commuter trips on an average weekday. Below one of the tracks, an old, deteriorating force main conveys 25 million gallons of sanitary water every day. To rehabilitate and reinforce the pipe with minimal disruption to commuters, slip-lining technology and a temporary force-main bypass solution were utilized.

Project Details

MFS Engineers & Surveyors provided professional site/civil engineering services for the Cross Town Force Main Rehabilitation project’s temporary force main by-pass in Jersey City, New Jersey. The planned construction consists of slip lining a 45” CCFRPM pipe through an existing 54” PCEP pipe. To complete this project, a 48” HDPE above-ground temporary bypass force main will provide temporary sewerage conveyance while the slip lining phase is completed.

MFS’ civil engineering team support J. Fletcher Creamer & Son, Inc., in the project by providing site/civil engineering services for approximately 3,000 linear feet of a 48” diameter temporary by-pass force main along NJ Transit’s rail service route. This included preparing construction documents with all necessary technical information to safely construct the temporary by-pass force main including schedules, elevations, and equipment capacity ratings. The documentation is to include an overall site plan, a temporary by-pass force main plan denoting all proposed temporary equipment and materials, and temporary by-pass force main profiles. The deliverables package included construction documents depicting the intended pipe layout with the appropriate railway protection measures.
